In a rare enforcement move, the Karachi Traffic Police have issued e-challans to 68 police mobiles over the last 13 days for traffic violations, including not wearing seatbelts and using mobile phones while driving, 24NewsHD reported.
The action reflects the city’s commitment to ensuring that no one is above the law, as the AI-powered e-challan system continues to detect violations through surveillance cameras across key intersections.
Officials said the system aims to improve compliance and safety by penalizing all offenders equally.
A senior officer noted,
“This campaign proves that accountability applies to everyone, even our own force.”
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Sindh High Court by JI Karachi chief Munam Zafar and others, challenging the legality of the e-challan system. The petition argues that fines are being sent to vehicle owners instead of actual drivers and calls for improvements in road infrastructure and vehicle record verification before implementation.
The e-challan initiative remains a crucial part of Karachi’s broader smart traffic management plan, despite growing public debate over its fairness and accuracy.
