Canada Offers Technical Assistance for Pakistan’s Mineral Industry

Published by

Pakistan and Canada have agreed to deepen economic cooperation, with Canada offering technical support and training to help modernize Pakistan’s mining and minerals sector. The understanding was reached during a meeting between Canadian High Commissioner and Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan, signaling stronger trade, investment, and agricultural ties between the two countries.

Pakistan has been actively seeking foreign investment to unlock its vast but underdeveloped mineral resources. Engagements at international forums such as the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference have helped Pakistan connect with global mining firms and promote its resource potential. Canada, known for its advanced mining expertise, has emerged as a key potential partner in this effort.

During the meeting, Pakistan formally invited Canada to collaborate in the mining and minerals sector. In response, Canada expressed readiness to support Pakistan through modern mining technologies and specialized workforce training. Officials emphasized that such cooperation could improve efficiency, transparency, and sustainability in mineral extraction.

A commerce ministry official noted that Pakistan’s participation at PDAC in Toronto led to “encouraging engagement with Canadian companies, reflecting growing international interest in Pakistan’s resource sector.”

Both sides also welcomed the restoration of canola imports from Canada, with initial shipments already arriving in Pakistan. Canola is critical for Pakistan’s edible oil needs and livestock feed industry, helping reduce pressure on domestic supplies.

Discussions further covered expanding cooperation in agriculture, agribusiness, and food security, including the use of modern technology, improved animal genetics, and better dairy and livestock practices. Canadian investment in renewable energy was also discussed, with Pakistan stressing the importance of regulatory stability to attract long-term foreign investment. Progress on the Pakistan–Canada Bilateral Investment Treaty was reviewed as well.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen private sector linkages and institutional cooperation. With technical support in mining, renewed agricultural trade, and interest in clean energy, Pakistan Canada relations appear set for broader and more sustainable economic engagement.
