Perplexity has released its AI powered Comet browser on the Google Play Store for Android users. The app is available at no cost and positions itself as one of the first browsers built from the ground up with artificial intelligence capabilities rather than simply adding AI as an afterthought.
Unlike conventional mobile browsers, Comet features a built in assistant capable of performing multi step tasks on command. Users can speak or type requests, asking the browser to summarise long articles, compare products, open multiple tabs or even complete tasks like preparing emails or offering shopping suggestions. The interface supports voice commands and is designed to respond fluidly across tabs and workflows.
Comet for Android is not simply a browser with an extra panel. It integrates AI deeply, using Perplexity’s own search engine which provides source cited answers rather than standard search results. The app also includes native ad blocking, aiming to improve browsing by removing pop ups and other common mobile distractions.
Perplexity previously launched Comet for desktop users under a paid subscription tier, but the Android version shifts away from that model. It is free to download, although usage limits or optional paid features may eventually apply. This approach significantly broadens access and lowers the barrier for new users to try the platform.
Early reactions highlight Comet’s broad feature set while also noting some limitations. Several beta users report that the current version offers limited sync support between desktop and mobile, meaning bookmarks and history may not yet transfer seamlessly.
Until recently, Comet’s internal AI was vulnerable to being hijacked by malicious links. This flaw allowed the browser to extract personal information from connected services like Gmail and send it off to fake attackers, as revealed by new research from the cybersecurity firm LayerX. This situation highlights that while AI-powered browsers can boost user productivity, they also bring along new security risks.
