Punjab Imposes Rs. 80 Million Fines in Anti-Smog Drive

In an aggressive move to combat rising smog levels, Punjab’s traffic police have issued fines worth over Rs. 80.8 million to more than 40,000 vehicles within just three weeks. The province-wide anti-smog campaign aims to curb vehicular pollution, a major contributor to deteriorating air quality.

The initiative comes amid growing environmental concerns and seasonal smog that threatens public health every winter. Authorities have ramped up checks across major cities including Lahore, Faisalabad, and Rawalpindi to ensure compliance with emission standards.

According to the traffic department spokesperson, over 40,400 challans were issued for smoke emissions, while 51 vehicles lost fitness certificates and 63 had route permits canceled. Moreover, 19 FIRs were registered and 7,700 vehicles impounded for serious violations.

“We urge citizens to avoid using poor-quality fuel and engine oil,” said DIG Traffic Muhammad Waqas Nazir, adding that officers are “committed to ensuring a smog-free Punjab.”

In addition, 2,300 vehicles carrying mud without covers were fined heavily for contributing to dust pollution.
