WhatsApp Introduces Motion Photo Sharing for More Dynamic Chats

WhatsApp is preparing to launch a new feature that will allow users to share motion photos in chats, groups, and channels, enhancing the way media is shared on the platform.

According to WABetaInfo, the feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.8.12 update on the Google Play Store. This update hints at WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to provide a richer media-sharing experience.

What Are Motion Photos?

Motion photos are a unique format that captures a few seconds of movement and sound before and after a still image. This blends elements of video and photography, offering a more engaging way to relive moments.

The feature is widely used on smartphones, as it adds subtle animation to static pictures, making memories feel more immersive. These photos are saved in a special format that retains both the still image and the accompanying short clip.

How Will It Work?

Users will find a new button in the gallery when selecting photos to send. If a motion photo is available, WhatsApp will offer the option to send either the static image or the animated version giving users more control over how they share media.

Once sent, motion photos will automatically play for recipients, even if their device doesn’t natively support the format. On iOS, these will likely appear as Live Photos, maintaining cross-platform compatibility.

Currently, the feature is still in development, with no confirmed release date. However, once rolled out, it will work across private chats, group conversations, and channels, allowing users to share animated snapshots effortlessly.

WhatsApp’s focus on expanding its media-sharing capabilities suggests more engaging and interactive communication is on the horizon for its users.
