700,000 Chromebooks to Be Given to Students Across Pakistan

The federal government has announced the phased distribution of 700,000 Chromebooks to students across Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, in a major push to expand digital learning and improve access to modern education tools.

Speaking at a ceremony in Islamabad, Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan said the initiative aims to strengthen digital education in schools, colleges, and universities by providing students with access to online learning platforms, updated academic resources, and modern software.

He said the programme is designed to help students compete in national and global environments by equipping them with essential digital skills needed in today’s technology driven world.

Rana Mashhood said the Chromebooks are being supplied by the TIF Foundation Lahore and will be rolled out in phases to ensure transparency and institutional readiness. A national monitoring mechanism will be introduced alongside the distribution to track device usage and evaluate learning outcomes in both classroom and remote education settings.

The initiative is part of the government’s broader strategy to reduce educational disparities between urban and rural areas. By including students from AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan, the programme aims to promote equitable access to technology-based education nationwide.

“Providing students with digital tools is a critical step toward strengthening Pakistan’s education system and preparing youth for future economic challenges,” Rana Mashhood said.

The chairman added that the Chromebook programme reflects growing collaboration with philanthropic organizations and overseas Pakistanis, whose support contributes to skills development, job creation, and long term economic growth. The initiative forms part of a wider plan to modernize education and expand digital literacy across the country.
