87 New Electric Buses Arrive in Rawalpindi
The Punjab government has received 87 new air-conditioned electric buses in Rawalpindi, imported from China, as part of efforts to modernize the garisson city’s public transport system and provide affordable travel options to citizens.
The project will span an 84-kilometer route network across the twin cities. Each electric bus is equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, and mobile charging ports to enhance commuter convenience. Construction work has already begun at the former Government Transport Service (GTS) station, while charging stations for the electric buses in Rawalpindi are set to be established at multiple points across the city.
Senior citizens aged above 60 will be able to travel free of cost, while regular fares have been set at Rs20 per ticket. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Rawalpindi Division President Malik Abrar Ahmed confirmed that the fleet of 87 electric buses will be launched across four routes in different phases.
In the first phase, the electric buses will operate from Rawat to Motorway Chowk, offering a comfortable and reliable commute to passengers. The project’s inauguration, originally scheduled for October 15 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, was pushed back to November due to civil unrest triggered by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) protests across Punjab.
