The recent hate-speech from Donald Trump has resulted in a huge amount of intolerance against him on social media and an out pour of support for the Muslim community. Leaders of some of the world’s top businesses are voicing their opinion on this predicament. Most recent to join the brigade is Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai.
In a new Medium blogpost titled “Let’s not let fear defeat our values”, Sundar Pichai has drawn a comparison to the current situation with when he himself immigrated to America as a student. He went on to describe America as a land of opportunity for the millions of immigrants it has received over the years.
“It’s been said a million times that America is the ‘land of opportunity’ — for millions of immigrants, it’s not an abstract notion, but a concrete description of what we find here.” He went on to say that, “That is why it’s so disheartening to see the intolerant discourse playing out in the news these days — statements that our country would be a better place without the voices, ideas and the contributions of certain groups of people, based solely on where they come from, or their religion.”
Pichai was sure to mention Google’s acceptance of diversity, race and ethnicity in their work culture. He also went ahead to say that whether you are building a company or leading a country a diverse mix of voices and backgrounds leads to better discussions and better outcomes for everyone.
He lend support to Muslims and other minorities by saying that the intolerance and hate-speech they have to bear are not the views of all. He ended his blog at this note:
“Let’s not let fear defeat our values. We must support Muslim and other minority communities in the US and around the world.”
Sundar Pichai, who was selected as Google’s new CEO in August, started his life in USA as an immigrant student from India when he first came here 22 years ago. Pichai is not the only one to lend support to the Muslims following Donald Trump’s hateful remarks. Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, also said that Facebook would “fight to protect the rights of Muslims” and work to create a peaceful and safe environment.
