Punjab Moves to Improve Education Board Efficiency With New 2025 Ordinance
The Punjab government has finalized the Punjab Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (Amendment) Ordinance 2025, introducing key reforms to reshape the structure and management of educational boards across the province. The ordinance will soon be presented to the Punjab Assembly for approval.
Under the new law, the Chief Minister will now serve as the controlling authority instead of the provincial government. This change is designed to strengthen administrative control and improve governance in all educational boards.
The amendment also opens positions for the private sector, allowing qualified professionals from private institutions to fill long-vacant posts. Earlier, these roles were restricted to government officials.
According to the draft, all appointments and policy decisions will require approval from the controlling authority. Sections 12, 13, 14, and 16 of the 1976 Act have been updated to redefine the powers of the Chief Minister and the Secretary of the Higher Education Department.
A new sub-clause under Section 20 sets performance and discipline standards for board employees. The reform aims to enhance transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the education system.
Officials said the move will help fill key administrative gaps that have slowed board operations in recent years. Once passed by the Punjab Assembly, the ordinance will take immediate effect across the province.
Governor Punjab, Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, has already approved the key amendments, paving the way for swift implementation.
