Lahore Aqi Peaks At 500 Today Despite Smog Restrictions

Lahore once again ranked as the world’s most polluted city after its average Air Quality Index (AQI) surged to an alarming 443. The reading places the city deep in the “hazardous” category, posing serious health risks to residents and renewing concerns over prolonged smog exposure.

Air quality deteriorated sharply across several localities by 1:00 pm, with Begampura recording an extremely dangerous AQI of 1,748, followed by Muslim Town at 848, Qila Gujjar Singh at 759, and Cantonment at 722. Environmental experts warn that exposure at these levels can trigger severe respiratory and cardiovascular issues, even among healthy individuals.

Lahore experiences severe smog every winter due to a mix of vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, crop residue burning, and unfavorable weather conditions that trap pollutants near the ground. Despite periodic government measures, including partial lockdowns and traffic restrictions, air quality continues to worsen during peak smog season.

Officials Urge Precautionary Measures

Health authorities have advised citizens to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and keep windows closed as pollution remains dangerously high.

“These AQI levels are not just unhealthy, they are life-threatening if sustained,” an environmental health expert warned, stressing the need for immediate and long-term policy action.

With Lahore repeatedly topping global pollution rankings, pressure is mounting on authorities to enforce stricter emission controls, regulate industrial output, and accelerate clean transport initiatives. Environmental groups argue that without sustained intervention, hazardous air episodes will continue to disrupt daily life and public health.
