The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has officially declared the use of SIMs registered under another person’s identity as illegal. In a statement issued today, the authority made it mandatory for all mobile SIM cards to be registered specifically in the name of their actual users.
This move marks a significant shift in telecom regulations. Consequently, the PTA urged consumers to ensure that all their active SIMs and telecom connections are registered under their own names. The authority warned that using a connection registered to someone else now violates telecom regulations. Therefore, such actions may lead to immediate legal action.
The PTA clarified the issue of accountability in its official statement. Explicitly, the registered user will be held fully responsible for any misuse of a SIM card. This liability covers all activities, including calls, messages, and data usage made through the registered number.
The authority stressed that users are accountable for ensuring the lawful use of their telecom connections. If a crime or violation occurs via a specific number, the person named in the registration records will face the consequences.
Compliance with these rules is not optional. The PTA stated that adherence to telecom rules governing communication and data usage is mandatory. Furthermore, any violation may result in severe repercussions. These include penalties, SIM suspension, or further legal proceedings.
This regulatory crackdown is part of the PTA’s broader efforts to achieve three main goals:

- Strengthen national security.
- Prevent cybercrime and financial fraud.
Consumers are advised to verify their SIM registration status immediately. The PTA recommends that users regularise any unregistered or improperly registered connections to avoid disruption and legal liability.
