Punjab has announced the purchase of electric bikes for excise department employees, marking the first time the province is shifting official field operations toward electric mobility to cut fuel costs and promote environmentally friendly transport.
The Punjab government has decided to procure electric bikes for excise inspectors working across the province, including Lahore. According to officials, 200 electric bikes will be purchased and distributed to inspectors in various districts based on operational needs.
Each electric bike will cost approximately Rs. 250,000, and the provincial government has approved a total budget of Rs. 50 million for the initiative. Officials confirmed that the procurement and allocation process will be completed within the current financial year.
An excise department official said, “The move will help inspectors perform field duties more efficiently while reducing fuel expenses and maintenance costs.”
This step aligns with Punjab’s broader push toward sustainable and cost-effective transportation. Over the past few years, the provincial government has promoted electric buses, e-taxis, and EV incentives as part of its climate and energy-saving strategy. Introducing electric bikes for government departments reflects growing institutional adoption of clean energy solutions.
Electric bikes are expected to lower recurring fuel expenses, reduce carbon emissions, and improve mobility for inspectors who routinely travel short to medium distances. Officials believe the initiative will modernize departmental logistics while supporting Pakistan’s environmental goals.
