The Standing Committee on Privatization has sought a detailed and comprehensive briefing on the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), citing the need for greater clarity on the process and its outcomes.
During its latest meeting, the Ministry of Privatization informed the committee that the privatization process of the national flag carrier has been completed. However, after deliberations, committee members noted that the information shared so far was not sufficient to fully understand the procedures, decisions, and results of the transaction.
The committee asked the ministry to present a complete report in the next meeting, covering all stages of the privatization, including how key decisions were taken and what outcomes were achieved. Special emphasis was placed on the role of PIA employees, with lawmakers stressing that both serving and retired employees’ unions must be clearly shown as having been consulted during the process.
The ministry was also instructed to explain how employee concerns were addressed and what consultation mechanisms were used. The committee underlined that workforce engagement remains a sensitive and critical issue, especially in the case of a national airline that has faced years of financial losses and operational challenges.
