Striking images continue to circulate online showing a highly unusual classroom scene. Numerous Chinese high school students are sitting at their desks, hooked up to intravenous (IV) drips. Makeshift lines strung across the brightly lit classroom ceiling hold multiple suspended IV bags. The desks disappear under massive stacks of educational materials, while adults navigate the tight spaces between the studying students.
At first glance, the setup looks like a makeshift hospital ward. However, the official explanation highlights a unique intersection of education and state health policies.
The Truth Behind the Chinese Students Using IV Drips
These photographs originate from Xiaogan High School. Specifically, they feature senior year (Grade 12) students from Class 3. Director Xia of the school’s Administrative Office recently clarified the situation. The students are not suffering from a severe outbreak or illness. Instead, the IV fluids contain amino acids. These specific drips serve to replenish the students’ energy.
Moreover, the Chinese state actively supports this energy-boosting measure. The government provides an annual 10 yuan amino acid subsidy. This policy directly targets students taking the National College Entrance Examination, commonly known as the ‘gaokao’. Therefore, if students feel unwell, they can apply to receive these amino acid drips.
From the Clinic to the Classroom
Initially, the school required eligible students to visit the school clinic for their IV drips. The administration organized this process on a strictly voluntary basis. However, poor weather recently hit the Xiaogan area. Consequently, several students started feeling under the weather. With the gaokao rapidly approaching, a massive number of seniors applied for the treatment.
As a result, the high volume of applicants rapidly overcrowded the school clinic. The school administration quickly identified a logistical problem. To avoid disrupting the students’ strict gaokao revision schedules, the school changed its approach. Officials relocated the IV drip administration directly into the classrooms. This decision successfully eliminated the transit time between the clinic and the students’ desks.
Documenting the Intense Environment
The visual evidence clearly captures this intense academic environment. One prominent image, bearing a clear Baidu Baike watermark, provides a stark angle of students working directly beneath the hanging medical bags. Ultimately, the school’s decision to move the drips to the students’ desks highlights the extreme focus surrounding gaokao preparations.
