The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority has amended the Solar Regulations 2026, removing the requirement for solar consumers to obtain NEPRA approval for power generation of up to 25 kilowatts.
Under the notification issued by NEPRA, the relevant power distribution company has now been given direct authority to approve such connections, eliminating a regulatory step that previously required central clearance.
The change comes as solar adoption continues to rise across the country amid high electricity prices and prolonged load shedding. The country has emerged as one of the nations experiencing a rapid solar energy shift, with demand no longer limited to wealthier households.
Lower-income consumers are increasingly turning to solar systems as conventional electricity remains costly and, in many areas, unreliable.
Both domestic and industrial consumer numbers connected to solar power continue to grow.
According to recent estimates, between 15 and 25 percent of Pakistani households now use some form of solar energy, ranging from basic lighting solutions to full household power systems and hybrid setups connected to the national grid.
