Government College University (GCU) Lahore has completed a full transition to paperless administrative operations, adopting a cloud-based digital system developed by the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) to manage all official processes.
The university received the E-Filing and Office Automation System free of cost on special instructions of the Punjab government. All departments now use a single online platform for leave applications, travel permissions, annual performance reports, official orders and administrative correspondence.
A university spokesperson said digital note sheets for inter-departmental proposals, approval of visiting faculty remuneration, purchase requests and departmental meeting agendas will also be processed exclusively through the system.
The platform is designed to eliminate the physical movement of files between offices, reducing delays and improving the tracking of administrative matters.
Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammad Umar Chaudhry said digital governance was essential for a modern higher education system. He said the shift from paper to digital platforms was not an environmental measure alone but a structural change intended to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability.
He added that removing administrative delays and manual file tracking would allow faculty members and administrative heads to focus more on teaching and research.
The university said the initiative is part of a wider digitalisation campaign launched under the vice chancellors leadership during the previous academic year. Earlier steps included online approval of student society events and digital billing for payments to visiting faculty members.
GCU is also preparing to launch an E-Services Portal to manage maintenance and other campus services, allowing repair requests and infrastructure issues to be processed without disrupting academic activities. Separately, the university has begun digitising alumni records as part of its broader digital transformation drive.
