Electricity prices in Pakistan are set to rise by Rs2.52 per unit for one month, pending approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has requested the increase as part of the fuel price adjustment for July, citing higher generation costs during the month.
NEPRA is holding a hearing today to review the request before issuing its final decision. According to the CPPA submission, electricity generated from diesel cost up to Rs50 per unit in July.
Power produced from imported coal was even costlier, reaching Rs54.47 per unit. Generation from imported liquefied natural gas (LNG) cost Rs47.37 per unit during the same period.
If approved, the increase would place an additional financial burden amounting to billions of rupees on electricity consumers. NEPRA is expected to examine all cost data presented during the hearing before issuing a final notification on whether the adjustment will proceed.
