The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication will examine allegations that Jazz overcharged mobile users by Rs6.58 billion, along with an outstanding $800 million Etisalat amount linked to PTCL’s privatisation and a reported Rs172 billion call-centre fraud.
The committee, chaired by Senator Palwasha Mohammad Zai Khan, will seek briefings from the PTA, Auditor General of Pakistan, Ministry of IT and Telecommunication, and FIA.
The PTA and Auditor General will explain the alleged Jazz overcharging and claims that the company was allowed to increase tariffs by up to 15 percent quarterly. The committee will also seek details of regulatory action taken to protect consumers.
MoITT will brief members on the $800 million reportedly outstanding from Etisalat and provide recent PTCL Board meeting minutes. Meanwhile, FIA will brief the committee on the reported Rs172 billion call-centre fraud and its investigation.
The meeting will also discuss alleged government data transfers to foreign entities, mobile-service closure in Lakki Marwat, digital connectivity projects in Balochistan, telecom competition rules and employment issues at Pak Datacom.
