The Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) and the Safe City Authority will begin joint action against littering in the provincial capital this week, with fines of up to Rs500,000 for violators.
LWMC Chief Executive Officer Shahryar Khan said Safe City cameras will be used to identify people dumping waste in public places. Once a violation is detected, LWMC field teams will reach the spot immediately and take action.
Under the rules, staff will show shopkeepers video evidence of the violation and can impose fines between Rs5,000 and Rs50,000 on the spot. Those found polluting the environment or burning waste will face the maximum fine of Rs500,000.
In the first phase, enforcement will focus on 10 major markets, including Mall Road, Jail Road, Ferozepur Road, Gulberg Main Boulevard and Liberty Chowk.
Khan said the drive will be extended to other markets and commercial centres once the first phase is complete. Action will also be taken against people who throw waste from vehicles.
