Apple appears to be taking a more modular approach to one of the most vulnerable parts of its upcoming foldable iPhone: the thin protective layer sitting on top of the main display. According to Apple’s service and repair information, the matte cover layer over the foldable phone’s inner screen can be replaced separately for $19.99 for customers with active AppleCare. The repair must be carried out through an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
That distinction could matter for foldable phones, where the outermost layer of the flexible display can eventually show signs of wear even when the underlying panel remains fully functional.
AppleCare also covers other repairs for the device at fixed service fees, including $29 for the cover display or back glass and $99 for a replacement of the inner display. Accidental-damage repairs cost $99, while theft and loss coverage carries a $149 service fee.
The company has previously indicated that the replaceable top layer is an intentional part of its repair strategy. In a recent interview, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering said the company wanted customers to have the option of replacing the layer as it wears down, while also emphasizing that Apple has worked to make the material as durable as possible.
That approach could help extend the usable life of the foldable iPhone without requiring a costly replacement of the entire display assembly.
There are still some important questions, however. It isn’t yet clear whether Apple will consider the top layer genuinely user-replaceable or whether the process will remain strictly a service-center repair. There is also the question of customization. If the layer can be replaced independently, third-party manufacturers could eventually offer alternatives with different finishes or properties, such as glossy surfaces or privacy filters.
And perhaps most importantly, Apple has yet to reveal how much the replacement will cost for customers without AppleCare.
Samsung already takes a similar approach with its foldable phones. The company offers one complimentary inner-screen protector replacement for Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip devices within the first 12 months of purchase. Subsequent replacements cost $19.99.
Apple’s decision to make the foldable display’s outer layer replaceable suggests it is thinking about long-term maintenance as part of the device’s design, rather than treating every worn protective layer as a full display repair.
We’ll have a clearer picture once the foldable iPhone reaches customers and Apple publishes the full repair procedure. For now, though, the option is a notable sign that Apple is considering the practical realities of owning a foldable phone, where even a relatively minor layer of wear shouldn’t necessarily mean replacing an entire display.
