Pakistan Post has begun considering electric bikes (e-bikes) for postmen to cut mail delivery costs, citing severe financial constraints and a shortage of fuel funds. In Punjab, the postmaster general has ordered a survey to gauge the willingness of postmen to obtain e-bikes.
Under the proposal, employees may receive the bikes through third-party financing on easy installments. The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is also being approached for cooperation on the initiative.
Separately, the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) has approved the revised PC-I for the automation of 2,761 Pakistan Post offices. A senior official said the project will cost over Rs6.29 billion and is due for completion by December 2029. It will be implemented with financial assistance from Exim Bank.
The project was prepared and presented by Director General Pakistan Post Maqsood Ahmad. Officials describe it as a significant step towards the institution’s digital transformation and long-term sustainability. Commenting on the approval, Squadron Leader (retd) Maqsood Ahmad called it a major milestone for the organisation.
The official said the e-bike proposal and the automation project are part of wider efforts to modernise Pakistan Post’s operations and use its finances more efficiently. Final implementation of both initiatives remains subject to the required approvals and subsequent operational steps by the relevant authorities.
