The government has set a target of establishing about 3,000 public electric vehicle (EV) charging facilities across Pakistan by 2030, the Ministry of Industries and Production informed the National Assembly on Thursday.
In a written reply to a question by Malik Shakir Bashir Awan, the ministry said the New Energy Vehicle (NEV) Policy 2025-30 provides for 40 fast-charging stations in the first phase, to be located along motorways and selected sections of the National Highway (N-5). Chargers are planned at intervals of about 50 km on major highways.
The ministry said fuel stations will be encouraged to install charging units, while the network of fast, Level 2 and Level 1 chargers will be expanded. Battery-swapping facilities are also planned for electric two- and three-wheelers.
The government is offering a dedicated commercial electricity tariff for charging stations and expedited electricity connections to draw private investment. Public-private partnerships, including viability gap funding arrangements, are also part of the plan.
The policy further covers the collection, transportation, reuse, dismantling and recycling of end-of-life EV batteries, particularly lithium-ion batteries. The ministry said work is under way on a regulatory framework and a nationwide network of battery collection and recycling facilities.
