Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has introduced a new subject-wise two-year degree program aimed at providing students with a faster and more flexible route to higher education. The initiative is designed for students who prefer not to commit to a traditional four-year degree while still earning a recognized qualification.
According to university officials, students enrolled in the new program will complete their degree within two years in a single chosen subject. After successful completion, graduates will also have the option to continue their education by directly entering the fifth semester of a related honours degree in the future.
An AIOU representative stated, “This program offers academic flexibility and ensures that students who pause their studies still have a clear pathway to resume higher education.”
The decision comes after AIOU observed consistently low enrollment in four-year degree programs. By introducing a shorter and subject focused degree, the university aims to make higher education more accessible, especially for working individuals and students from remote areas. The university also clarified that this program is separate from the existing two-year Associate Degree and does not replace it.
This step reflects AIOU’s broader strategy to adapt to changing student needs and expand participation in higher education across Pakistan through flexible learning options.
