Android 16 Identity Check Feature Enhances Anti-Theft Security

The upcoming Android 16 Identity Check feature is set to deliver enhanced anti-theft protection across more Android devices, building on Google’s earlier Pixel-exclusive launch.

Initially introduced through the December 2024 Pixel Feature Drop, the Android 16 Identity Check feature is now confirmed to roll out to all supported Android devices with the Android 16 update. Samsung has already implemented it in its One UI 7 skin based on Android 15, but for other OEMs, the feature will officially arrive with Android 16.

Identity Check adds a critical layer of device protection. Once enabled, it requires biometric authentication—such as a fingerprint or facial recognition—to access saved passwords or modify essential security settings. What sets this apart is that it does not allow fallback options like PIN or password entry. If someone tries to bypass biometrics, they’ll simply be locked out.

This approach is meant to make it harder for thieves to access your personal information, even if they steal your phone. Of course, if someone attempts to force biometric access, the situation escalates far beyond simple theft.

Because Identity Check needed a complete rewrite of biometric code to disable traditional PIN/password fallback, it could not be introduced through a Google Play Services update. That’s why it’s bundled directly with the Android 16 OS update. Samsung acted quickly by including it early in One UI 7, and other manufacturers are expected to follow suit.

With the Android 16 Identity Check feature, Google is pushing stronger, more intelligent security measures to the broader Android ecosystem.
