Another one bites the dust: Google to get rid of Google Hire in 2020

Google might look like the most self-assured tech company in this world, but it has ended up scrapping some much-celebrated applications in recent years after giving up on them. In fact, there’s an entire website called Google Cemetery where you can view all the products that have already been buried (Google+, Google Allo) and the ones that are set to be ditched. The latter category happens to include Google Hire, a product that you might not have heard of before, but this is also going to be the last you’ll ever hear of it.

Launched a couple of years ago, Hire is Google’s premium job application tracking system that aims to streamline the hiring and recruiting process. It features a workflow that integrates relevant things like searching for job applicants, scheduling interviews and supplying feedback about potential suitable candidates for the services in Google’s G Suite (Gmail, Calendar, Docs, etc.)

With a price range from $200 to $400 per month, Hire is aimed at small- and medium-sized businesses, with the final price depending on the number of G Suite licenses the business needs.

The application came into existence after Google acquired Bebop, a startup launched by Diane Greene, for a considerable sum of $380 million back in 2015. After serving as the CEO of Google’s Cloud Division, Greene eventually left in early 2019.

As far as the reasons behind burying Hire are concerned, Google had this to say in an email to its users:

While Hire has been successful, we’re focusing our resources on other products in the Google Cloud portfolio. We are deeply grateful to our customers, as well as the champions and advocates who have joined and supported us along the way.

If you are particularly bothered by this development for some reason, there is reason to be happy: Hire won’t be removed immediately. In fact, it will be around until the 1st of September in 2020. It’s just that no new features will be included from now on.
