Another University of Lahore Student Attempts Suicide, Campus Closed Temporarily
A 21-year-old first-semester Pharm-D student at the University of Lahore is fighting for her life after a suicide attempt on Monday morning. The student jumped from the second floor of a University of Lahore building and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Doctors say she remains in critical condition under close medical supervision.
According to initial details, the student faced intense academic stress and family pressure to perform well. Sources said she spoke with her brother earlier that morning. At that time, nothing appeared unusual.
Nawab Town police reached the campus shortly after the incident and began investigating the case. Police officials are collecting statements from university staff and students to determine the circumstances.
Following the incident, the University of Lahore closed the campus and shifted classes online until further notice. Administrators said the move aims to ensure student safety and provide support to those affected.
University officials expressed concern and said they are coordinating with doctors and the student’s family. They added that they are reviewing internal procedures after the incident.
However, several students and sources painted a harsher picture of campus life. One source said teachers, admin staff, and registration staff behave very strictly with students. The source claimed this treatment has pushed some students toward extreme steps.
Another source blamed heavy fees for rising pressure on students. They said the university charges double or triple fines for absences. They added that students are barred from exams and face repeated pressure over payments.
Students also pointed to the Higher Education Commission rules. HEC guidelines require universities to allow 10 to 15 students to study for free. Sources claimed the University of Lahore does not follow these rules.
This is the second reported case in the same department within weeks. On 18 December, Pharm-D student Muhammad Owais reportedly died by suicide. The repeated incidents have alarmed students across the campus.
After the latest attempt, many students raised their voices publicly. Some demanded an immediate ban on such universities. They also called for serious mental health support and fair academic policies.
