Anthropic’s Claude Chatbot and Services Go Down for Thousands Worldwide

Published by

EDIT: There are elevated errors on Claude Opus 4.6 model as the rest have begun normalizing. This is a developing story.

Anthropic’s Claude artificial intelligence platform suffered widespread outages this week, leaving thousands of users unable to access the chatbot and related services across multiple regions. Early on Monday, March 2, 2026, customers began reporting disruptions on monitoring sites and social posts, with error messages and failed login attempts affecting both the web interface and coding tools.

Outage-tracking data showed a surge in problem reports as users in North America, Europe, Africa and Asia experienced login failures or responded with errors when attempting to interact with Claude’s chat and services. Reports indicated that access issues extended to Claude Code, the AI-powered coding assistant used by developers for programming tasks, while the wider Claude ecosystem saw elevated errors during peak hours.

Given how the situation has been for the past three days globally, this incident does not seem isolated. Observers note that Claude has faced a second outage in less than 24 hours, signaling persistent instability for the platform.

Anthropic’s own status updates confirmed elevated error rates and system issues affecting core functionality, while engineers worked to restore normal operations. Outages often began with login and authentication path failures, followed by intermittent model response issues throughout the day.

Industry analysts say major AI outages in the light of the recent US-government blacklisting efforts against Anthropic, are proving to be particularly heavy for cloud-based models. This comes even though the creators of Claude have been very transparent with their inner workings with the US government. As Dario Amodei wrote in a blog:

Claude is extensively deployed across the Department of War and other national security agencies for mission-critical applications, such as intelligence analysis, modeling and simulation, operational planning, cyber operations, and more.

AI is becoming a bigger part of our daily lives, with tech leaders encouraging everyone to get on board, despite the controversies surrounding the tech with mass surveillance and remote war deployment rumors. Anthropic’s Claude became popular for its exceptional coding capabilities, large context window, and its ability to act as an autonomous agent to build software. The outage we experienced on Monday, and again on Tuesday, showing how reliant many of us have become on tools like Claude and Claude Code.
