Authorities have decided to relocate public transport bus stands, truck terminals, and warehouses from major city corridors to the Rawalpindi Ring Road to reduce severe traffic congestion in the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.
The relocation plan covers major transport hubs, including Faizabad, Pirwadhai General Bus Stand, Peshawar Road, and Chungi No 26. Officials aim to complete the shift before the Rawalpindi Ring Road project, expected in March 2026, becomes fully operational.
Under the plan, more than 750 acres of land will be acquired to establish new transport and logistics zones along the Ring Road. Passengers traveling to other cities will access the terminals via smaller feeder vehicles, while goods transport serving Ganj Mandi will be restricted to designated truck terminals on the Ring Road.
Currently, heavy public and goods transport enters Rawalpindi from all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir via the motorway and GT Road, causing severe congestion and damaging inner-city roads. Relocating transport facilities is expected to significantly ease traffic pressure in both city and cantonment areas.
The decision was finalized with consensus from the Rawalpindi Development Authority, Regional Transport Authority, traffic police, Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation, and other relevant stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition and improved traffic flow.
