Basant Revival in Lahore as Government Reviews Potential Dates
Lahore is buzzing with the possibility of a colourful return. A senior minister recently called a key meeting to discuss the revival of the Basant festival. The discussion focused heavily on potential dates, administrative setups, and crucial security plans.
Sources indicate that officials are considering two specific timeframes for the event. They proposed February 14 and February 15 as the first option. Alternatively, they are looking at March 21 and March 22. Officials suggested these dates after analysing weather patterns and administrative facilities. Furthermore, they believe these dates will maximise public participation.
However, the celebration is not official yet. The final decision rests entirely with the Punjab government. The Deputy Commissioner of Lahore will only issue the two-day permission after receiving clear directives from provincial authorities.
Currently, the festival remains a proposal. Consequently, the meeting placed a heavy emphasis on safety. In the past, kite strings caused several accidents. Therefore, resolving these safety issues is the main obstacle to the festival’s revival.
Despite the challenges, the response is positive. City residents and the business community have welcomed the potential return of Basant. They note that the festival brings joy and significantly boosts the local economy. Specifically, a revival would support the hospitality, tourism, and restaurant sectors. The final announcement will follow the government’s official decision.
