Biman Bangladesh Airlines Set to Resume Direct Flights to Pakistan From January 29
The long wait is finally over. Biman Bangladesh Airlines has officially announced the resumption of direct flights to Pakistan. Starting January 29, the national carrier will operate the Dhaka-Karachi route twice a week. This marks the first regular flight service between the two nations since 2012.
Currently, travellers endure long layovers. They must use connecting flights through Gulf hubs like Dubai and Doha. However, this relaunch changes the dynamic entirely. Airline manager Bosra Islam confirmed the new schedule on Thursday. According to the airline, this move will significantly improve connectivity. They aim to support business travel, tourism, and family reunions.
Pakistan & Bangladesh: A Shift in Diplomatic Ties
This aviation milestone follows a major shift in regional power. Relations between the two countries have warmed significantly following the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024. Since the student-led revolt ended her 15-year rule, ties between the Muslim-majority nations have strengthened. Conversely, Dhaka’s relationship with Hasina’s old ally, India, has turned frosty.
High-level diplomatic engagements paved the way for this development. In August 2025, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar visited Dhaka to meet Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus. More recently, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq travelled to Dhaka in December for the funeral of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.
Boosting Trade & Culture
The renewed connectivity extends beyond passenger travel. Cargo ships resumed sailing from Karachi to Chittagong in November 2024. Consequently, trade volume has risen.
Cultural exchanges are also gaining momentum. Popular Pakistani singers are now performing in Dhaka. Additionally, Bangladeshi patients are increasingly travelling to Pakistan for medical care. Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Imran Haider, had previously expressed hope for this January launch, and that hope is now a reality.
