CDA Launches Kashmir Chowk Traffic Study to Reduce Congestion

Published by

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has launched a comprehensive traffic management study at Kashmir Chowk, Islamabad, to tackle the chronic congestion at this busy signal-free junction. The initiative aims to improve mobility, reduce travel delays, and provide sustainable traffic solutions in one of the city’s most congested areas.

Kashmir Chowk has long been a traffic bottleneck, with heavy vehicles, unregulated movement, and inadequate pedestrian facilities contributing to daily gridlocks. Commuters and public transport users have frequently faced delays during peak hours, highlighting the urgent need for structural and traffic flow improvements.

The CDA has invited consultancy firms to submit proposals for detailed traffic and engineering assessments. Consultants will examine vehicle flow, road capacity, pedestrian movement, public transport operations, and safety issues.

The study will focus on recommending both short-term and long-term solutions, including options such as an underpass, flyover, or other grade-separated facilities. Officials emphasized that the plan will exclude signal-based interventions, instead prioritizing geometric road improvements, access management, and efficient traffic operations.

A CDA spokesperson said, “This study is aimed at creating sustainable traffic solutions that ensure smoother mobility at Kashmir Chowk while reducing travel delays for daily commuters.”

Once the technical evaluation is complete, the CDA will implement recommendations in phased development, depending on approvals and funding availability. The authority is committed to modernizing Islamabad’s traffic network and ensuring safer, faster journeys for residents.

Traffic congestion at Kashmir Chowk is symptomatic of Islamabad’s growing vehicle population and rising urbanization. Experts suggest that solutions like underpasses and flyovers, combined with smart access management, are key to reducing delays without relying solely on traffic signals.
