Islamabad is preparing to step into a new era of eco-friendly urban mobility as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) moves forward with plans to introduce a modern electric tram system in the federal capital. The project aims to provide affordable, comfortable, and environmentally clean public transport while reducing traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
A high-level meeting was held at CDA Headquarters on Wednesday, chaired by CDA Chairman and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, Muhammad Ali Randhawa, to review progress on electric tram and e-bus initiatives. Senior CDA officials discussed practical implementation, infrastructure needs, and future integration of the project with Islamabad’s existing transport network.
The chairman directed that a feasibility study for the electric tram be conducted soon, focusing on routes connecting key areas of the city, including Islamabad International Airport, and based on updated ridership data and future demand projections.
According to CDA officials, the electric tram project will include state of the art depots, parking areas, charging stations, and maintenance facilities. The system will operate under a modern Intelligent Transport System (ITS), ensuring smooth operations, safety, and efficiency.
Chairman Randhawa emphasized that the entire operation will be fully digital and cashless, adding that carbon credit acquisition must be ensured at the planning stage to strengthen the project’s environmental impact.
“This historic step will not only provide modern travel facilities to citizens but will also play a vital role in reducing environmental pollution in Islamabad,” said Muhammad Ali Randhawa.
Islamabad has been exploring sustainable transport solutions for several years to tackle rising traffic volumes and air pollution. The proposed electric tram, alongside ongoing e-bus projects, reflects the government’s broader shift toward green mobility and climate-friendly urban planning.
Once implemented, the project is expected to ease daily commuting, cut fuel consumption, and align Islamabad with global trends in clean public transportation.
