Apple has made a small change today in Apple ID working. For the first time, Apple customers who have an Apple ID that uses a third-party email address can update that Apple ID to use an Apple @icloud.com, @me.com, or @mac.com email address.
Earlier an Apple ID that used a third-party email address could not be changed to Apple email accounts that were created when an Apple ID is made. Apple has recently updated its support document to resolve this issue.

This is a notable change for users who may have made their Apple ID with a Gmail or Yahoo account which have become dysfunctional as they’ve joined the Apple ecosystem.
If your Apple ID is a third-party email address, before you change your Apple ID email address, you need to sign out of every Apple service and device that uses your Apple ID. If you want to use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to change your Apple ID, stay signed in to your Apple ID on just that device.
Use your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
Use your Apple ID account page
This change will be helpful for many users of Apple’s devices. Those users will prefer not to use Gmail or other Google services just to manage their iTunes and AppStore purchases as almost everything is available on their iCloud platform.
