CM Punjab Launches Pakistan’s First E-Taxi Service

Published by

Punjab has officially entered the electric transport space with the launch of its first government-backed e-Taxi scheme. The project, introduced under the Vision 2030 framework, aims to provide affordable transport, reduce pollution, and create income opportunities for drivers. The initial phase has started in Lahore, with expansion planned across the province.

The scheme was launched by Maryam Nawaz, who described it as a step toward building a sustainable transport system in Punjab. Under the pilot phase, 1,100 electric taxis are being provided at subsidized rates, making them more accessible for individuals looking to enter the ride-hailing sector.

Opening Doors for Women

A notable aspect of the initiative is its focus on women’s inclusion. 30% of the electric taxis have been reserved for female applicants, which the chief minister said would help increase women’s participation in the transport sector, an area traditionally dominated by men.

To make the scheme financially viable, the Punjab government has announced subsidies worth up to Rs. 4 billion. The government will cover 15% of the down payment for general applicants, allowing them to purchase an e-Taxi for approximately Rs. 690,000. For women applicants, the relief is significantly higher, with the government paying 60% of the down payment.

The chief minister said the electric taxis would begin operating on Lahore roads within 48 hours of the launch. She added that the service would gradually be extended to other districts and tehsils in the coming weeks.
