The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has approved a plan to install Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) smart meters exclusively at Punjab government departments and institutions, leaving ordinary consumers with faulty meters to receive conventional static replacements instead.
A formal directive on the rollout has been issued, and notifications have been sent to all relevant government offices instructing them to prepare for the installation of AMI smart meters.
Under the plan, government electricity connections in LESCOs Northern, Central and Eastern circles will be upgraded to the new smart meters. The campaign will extend to government institutions in Okara, South Circle, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib and Kasur.
While government departments move to the upgraded system, ordinary consumers whose meters are found faulty or defective will not be provided AMI smart meters.
Instead, they will continue receiving standard static meters under the existing replacement policy, creating a disparity in access to the upgraded metering technology between government and residential consumers.
