Dr. Niaz Ahmed Akhtar has been appointed as the new Chairman of Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) for a two-year term, with the Prime Minister approving the appointment in his capacity as the HEC’s controlling authority.

The official notification, issued by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, directs all relevant authorities, including the President’s Secretariat, Prime Minister’s Office, Cabinet Division, and senior officials of the HEC, to take note of the appointment.

Previously this year, a search committee formed by the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training shortlisted three candidates for the prestigious post. Alongside Dr. Akhtar, the committee recommended Dr. Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, and Dr. Muhammad Ali, a well-regarded researcher and administrator. The final selection was made by the Prime Minister.

Dr. Akhtar brings a lot of experience in higher education and academic administration. His leadership roles include serving as Vice-Chancellor of Punjab University and the University of Engineering and Technology, Taxila, as well as Rector of the National Textile University in Faisalabad. His appointment is expected to guide the HEC in enhancing quality education, promoting research, and strengthening governance across Pakistan’s universities.
