Electric Vehicles Now Included in Islamabad Vehicle Transfer Fees

ISLAMABAD: In a significant policy update, electric vehicles (EVs) have been included in Islamabad’s vehicle transfer fee structure for the first time, with new rates set to take effect from April 14, 2025. The revised fee schedule, issued by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), covers all vehicle categories, from conventional cars to electric vehicles and motorcycles.
EVs with a battery capacity of up to 50kW will now be subject to a transfer fee of Rs2,500, while those between 50kW and 100kW will incur Rs5,500. For EVs above 100kW, the fee jumps to Rs10,000. This inclusion marks a significant change, as electric vehicles were previously exempt from transfer fees—a policy that had helped promote green alternatives in the country.
The hike comes at a time when Indus Motors CEO Ali Asghar Jamali recently pointed out that government taxes already contribute 38% to 40% of the retail price of vehicles. Industry observers believe the revised transfer fees could further inflate the cost of vehicle ownership, even as Pakistan looks to diversify its mobility landscape with hybrid and electric options.
Here’s a summary of the updated vehicle transfer fees:
Vehicle Type | Previous Fee (PKR) | Revised Fee (PKR) |
---|---|---|
Cars up to 1000cc | 1,200 | 2,750 |
Cars 1000cc – 1800cc | 2,000 | 5,500 |
Cars above 1800cc | 3,000 | 11,000 |
Electric Vehicles up to 50kW | – | 2,500 |
Electric Vehicles 50kW – 100kW | – | 5,500 |
Electric Vehicles above 100kW | – | 10,000 |
Motorbikes up to 200cc | 150 | 550 |
Motorbikes 200cc – 400cc | – | 1,000 |
Motorbikes above 400cc | – | 1,500 |
All updated fees are to be deposited into the Ministry of Finance’s designated account. While the move aims to regulate and standardize transfer procedures, analysts warn it may dampen already sluggish consumer interest, especially amid economic constraints and rising car prices in Pakistan.
