Electricity Tariff May Increase by Rs1.78 per Unit for One Month

Published by

Electricity consumers may face a temporary increase of Rs1.78 per unit next month as the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has sought approval from the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) under the monthly fuel price adjustment mechanism.

According to the petition filed for January’s fuel adjustment, the reference fuel cost stood at Rs10.39 per unit, while the actual generation cost increased to Rs12.17 per unit, creating a gap that now requires recovery from consumers.

NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on February 26 to review the request. If approved, the hike will be applicable for one month only.

Data shared by CPPA showed that 9.14 billion units of electricity were generated during the month, out of which 8.762 billion units were supplied to distribution companies across the country.

Officials said the proposed adjustment reflects higher fuel generation costs and is part of the routine monthly mechanism designed to pass variations in fuel prices to consumers.

Fuel price adjustments are applied periodically to reflect changes in global fuel costs and power generation expenses. These adjustments are temporary and vary each month depending on the cost of electricity production. Consumers across Pakistan are affected if NEPRA approves the proposed increase.
