ISLAMABAD: The number of FBR registered businesses has officially crossed 12.5 million, according to figures presented in the National Assembly, marking a significant milestone in Pakistan’s tax base expansion efforts.

Over the past three years, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has added 5.3 million new business taxpayers, indicating a substantial rise in formal economic participation. This growth is being attributed to ongoing government reforms and streamlined digital registration processes aimed at encouraging more businesses to enter the formal economy.

Provincial data shows that Punjab leads the country with 8.2 million FBR registered businesses, followed by Sindh with 2.876 million. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has 818,000 registered entities, while Islamabad and Balochistan report 467,000 and 221,000, respectively.

The steady rise in registration figures highlights the success of the FBR’s strategy to widen the tax net and promote compliance. Officials believe that continued digital transformation and policy incentives will further strengthen the formal sector, enhance revenue collection, and contribute to economic transparency.
