The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) announced the arrest of a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) official accused of approving fake identity cards for Afghan nationals in Karachi.
FIA officials conducted a raid in Metroville SITE area, detaining two Afghan nationals found carrying illegal Pakistani identity documents issued through unauthorized approval channels.
Investigators identified Nadra official Furqan Ahmed Khan Durrani as responsible for approving CNIC for the Afghan nationals arrested during the Metroville SITE operation.
Durrani was taken into custody during a subsequent raid in the Nursery area in Karachi, with charges filed under the Foreigners Act, 1946 and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.
FIA confirmed obtaining three-day physical remand of arrested suspects, though it remained unclear whether the Nadra official was included among those remanded.
Government records show that since September 2023, over 1.82 million Afghan nationals have returned under the Illegal Foreigners’ Repatriation Plan initiated to regulate undocumented migration.
In 2024, Nadra and FIA jointly uncovered an illicit operation involving unauthorized issuance of identity cards to foreigners, leading to disciplinary action against five Nadra employees.
Meanwhile, FIA has developed an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered system to track down most wanted criminals by digitally reconstructing their appearance in real time.
Speaking to media, FIA Director General Dr. Usman Anwar said the agency’s Red Book, which contains details of high-profile fugitives, is being upgraded with advanced AI tools.
These tools will generate updated visuals of suspects based on older photographs, enabling authorities to identify individuals even if they have significantly altered their appearance.
