Multan: In a significant move to reduce motorway accidents, the Punjab authorities have registered the first-ever First Information Report (FIR) against a driver for exceeding the speed limit on the M-4 motorway near Multan, an official confirmed on Thursday.
The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) previously informed drivers that speed violation would lead to criminal cases and vehicle impoundment when drivers sped past 150 kilometers per hour. The police have received instructions to inform drivers in specific terms about upcoming criminal charges and vehicle confiscation for speed limit violations.
Motorway drivers must obey speed restrictions of 120 km/h according to traffic regulations for all vehicles including cars and jeeps and light transport vehicles (LTVs) and heavy transport vehicles must operate within a 110 km/h limit.
Motorway Police Spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed stated, “The first FIR was registered for speeding on the motorway, and the driver had been arrested.”
The speeding incident took place on the M-4 motorway near Multan as a vehicle reached 173 kilometers per hour beyond legal speed limits.
Police filed this case at Badlah-e-Sant Police Station in Multan based on driving negligently and driving too fast. Local police took control of the driver who received arrest after the incident. Police announced the continuation of strict enforcement against speed violations according to the spokesperson.
