The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to appoint former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed as the new head coach of the national Test team, marking a significant change in the red-ball leadership structure.
Media reports say that an official announcement from the PCB is expected soon, with Sarfaraz likely to begin his responsibilities during the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh.
The position had remained vacant after Australian coach Jason Gillespie resigned, while Azhar Mahmood was appointed interim head coach for the recent series against South Africa.
Pakistan are scheduled to play a two-match Test series against Bangladesh in May, and the contest will form part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2027 cycle.
The first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh will begin on May 8, while the second match of the series is set to start on May 16.
The national team is also scheduled to visit England in July and August to play a three-Test series, including one match at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
Before this development, Sarfaraz had been serving as the mentor of the Under-19 team, guiding them to victory in the Asia Cup and fulfilling mentoring duties during the recent Under-19 World Cup.
