Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday underlined the need for Pakistan to develop its own locally manufactured vehicles and promote economical electric bikes to make transport more affordable and sustainable.
The remarks came during a meeting with Chief Executive Officer of the Engineering Development Board (EDB), Hamad Ali Mansoor, at the Aiwan-e-Sadr. The EDB functions under the Ministry of Industries and Production and plays a central role in shaping policies for the country’s engineering and manufacturing sectors.
During the briefing, the EDB chief shared details about the board’s mandate and ongoing efforts to strengthen Pakistan’s engineering base. These include policy planning, tariff reforms, industrial development frameworks, and initiatives related to the automobile and electric vehicle sectors. The focus, he said, remains on improving technical skills, encouraging research and development, and aligning local industries with international standards.
Mr. Gilani appreciated the role of the EDB and stressed that the transition towards electric vehicles is no longer optional, particularly in the context of rising environmental concerns and economic pressures. He said Pakistan should work towards introducing a made-in-Pakistan vehicle under a local brand, alongside low-cost electric bikes, to support domestic industry and provide affordable mobility options to the public.
The Acting President also reaffirmed the government’s support for the engineering sector, describing it as a key pillar for industrial growth, job creation and long-term economic stability. As fuel prices remain volatile and urban congestion continues to grow, the emphasis on local manufacturing and electric mobility appears timely.
