God of War Ragnarok Datamine Hints at Egyptian Setting & New Lead

Published by

A recent God of War Ragnarok datamine gives fans a massive clue about the franchise’s future. Reddit user TheMorse uncovered unused files and cutscenes from the 2022 game. Consequently, this hidden data strongly points toward an upcoming Egyptian setting.

Next Stop: Ancient Egypt?

The datamined audio reveals figures discussing Kratos and his son, Atreus. One figure, presumably a disguised Athena, speaks the Greek phrase, “To lefkó fídi tha se fáei”. This translates directly to “The white snake will eat you.”

Furthermore, another cutscene shows Atreus talking to a mysterious figure named “Mau”. In Egyptian, “Mau” means “cat” and represents a manifestation of the sun god, Ra. Therefore, the “white snake” likely refers to Apophis, an Egyptian mythological serpent that constantly battles Ra. Ultimately, these combined clues strongly support existing rumors that the next game will take place in Egypt.

Atreus Takes the Lead

The franchise might also see a major character shift. The newly discovered scenes suggest Atreus will take over as the main protagonist. As a result, the next installment will shift the primary focus away from Kratos. Fans have good reason to trust this information. Previously, TheMorse accurately found unused cutscenes in the 2018 God of War that perfectly hinted at Ragnarok’s opening.

Classic God of War Remakes on the Horizon

In addition to future sequels, Santa Monica Studios recently announced a remake of the original Greek God of War trilogy for modern consoles. To coincide with this massive announcement, the studio also released a brand-new side-scrolling prequel titled God of War: Sons of Sparta.
