Google has started testing a new voice-powered feature called Gmail Live that allows users to search their Gmail inbox using natural voice commands instead of typing.
According to reports, the feature is currently rolling out to a limited group of Android and iOS users as part of an early testing phase. A wider release for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers is expected later this summer.
What is Gmail Live?
Gmail Live adds a dedicated “Live” icon to the Gmail search bar. Tapping it opens a full-screen voice interface where users can speak their queries naturally. The system transcribes the spoken question in real time, processes it using Google’s Gemini AI, and provides both spoken and on-screen responses.
Examples of suggested prompts include:
- “What are updates on my latest orders?”
- “What are my upcoming travel dates?”
The tool not only reads the answer aloud but also displays relevant emails on screen for easy verification. Users can mute the microphone or exit the voice mode at any time.
Part of Google’s Broader Voice AI Push
Gmail Live is the latest addition to Google’s expanding lineup of voice-first AI features. It builds on previously launched tools such as:
- Gemini Live (real-time conversational AI assistant)
- Search Live (voice interaction in Google Search)
Google has indicated plans to bring similar voice capabilities to other Workspace apps, including Docs and Keep, in the future.
Availability and Rollout
The feature is currently in limited testing and will initially be available to paid subscribers of Google’s higher-tier AI plans. No exact date has been confirmed for public availability, but it is expected sometime later in summer 2026.
This development comes as Google continues to integrate its Gemini AI model more deeply across its ecosystem of products, aiming to make everyday tasks like email management more intuitive and hands-free.
