Google Chrome is experimenting with new generative AI features that integrate directly into the browser’s interface, a move that could transform browsing from passive search to active assistance. Multiple reports indicate Google is embedding its Gemini model on the New Tab page and within Chrome’s omnibox, signalling a strategic shift in browser architecture.

Two labelled features have appeared in early builds, hinting at how Google intends to make AI more prominent in Chrome.

  • Nano Banana: Reports suggest this icon triggers a placeholder change in the search bar to “Create an image of…”, indicating text-to-image generation is being baked into the browsing workflow. Additionally, the pilot image generation model under this name is already integrated into Google Search and Photos.
  • Deep Search: This appears to build on AI Mode, a multi-step model that uses Gemini to reason across sub-queries and integrate multiple data sources. Google describes Deep Search as an “advanced research tool” that pulls from hundreds of sites and reasons across them.

These developments suggest Chrome is moving towards becoming an “AI-powered assistant” in the browser, not just a gateway to the web.

Strategic Move and Competitive Context

Google’s push aligns with broader market dynamics: browsers are no longer just about tabs and URLs. They’re becoming platforms for generative AI services.

Google’s own documentation confirms that Gemini in Chrome will help users easily understand content on the web. Users will also be able to get tedious tasks done using the context of your open tabs.

Competitors are already moving ahead: Microsoft Edge embedded its Copilot assistant in 2023, offering sidebar-based AI tasks. Google’s integration could help retain users within its ecosystem by surfacing AI features seamlessly.

The feature rollout raises multiple implications.

  • Privacy concerns: As these AI features gain access to browser context such as open tabs, history, and active workflows, users and regulators may have serious questions. A recent leak described “agentic browsing,” where the browser could perform tasks like ordering food.
