Google Ends Clock App Support for Non-Pixel Wear OS Watches
Google has announced that its Clock app for Wear OS will no longer receive support or be available for download on smartwatches made by manufacturers other than its own Pixel Watch line. The change will impact users of brands like Samsung, Fossil, and Mobvoi who run Wear OS, while devices using Google’s Pixel Watch will remain unaffected.
In a post on the Wear OS support forum, Google stated that the Clock app’s Play Store listing will be withdrawn for all non Pixel smartwatches. Users who have already installed the app can continue using it, but it will no longer receive updates. Google explained that the move is driven by the fact that other watchmakers now offer their own default clock apps, making Google’s version redundant on non Pixel devices.
While alternative apps exist in the Play Store, the shift represents a downgrade in integration and convenience for affected users. Smartwatch manufacturers and brands may be forced to accelerate development of their own clock apps or redirect users to third party solutions, which could introduce compatibility, reliability, and update policy concerns.
If you own a non Pixel Wear OS watch, you have two immediate paths: continue using the installed Clock app without future updates or migrate to a different clock application. Users considering a new watch may also choose to switch to the Pixel Watch line to retain native Google ecosystem features.
Google hasn’t specified a hard deadline for when the Clock app will drop off the Play Store for non Pixel devices, so users may still have time before the change takes full effect.
For now, non Pixel Wear OS users should prepare for the changes ahead as their traditional Clock experience is about to tick differently.
