Google Phones Could Let You Tag Calls as Urgent Before Calling

Android users may soon get a way to highlight important calls and grab attention instantly. A new feature spotted in the beta version of the Phone by Google app suggests you could attach a brief message to your outgoing calls. This message would appear directly on the recipient’s screen, making it clear why you’re calling.

The feature was first noticed by Android Authority in version 201.0.833052069 of the Phone by Google app. It is currently called “Expressive Calling” but may launch as “Call Reason.” Callers can send short notices with emojis or icons:

  • “Catch up” with a wave emoji
  • “Quick question” with a question mark
  • “News to share” with a bell icon
  • “It’s urgent,” with a siren image

In certain situations, the feature could even bypass a recipient’s Do Not Disturb mode for emergency calls. To prevent misuse, this override would likely be limited to saved contacts only, shielding users from spam or scam calls.

One key uncertainty remains: how this feature will work when calling people who don’t use the Phone by Google app. Currently, it is not available on iPhone, and not all Android devices have it by default. Google has not announced a release date, so details on availability and functionality remain limited.
