Google is rolling out a major overhaul of Google Translate today, adding Gemini AI to push translation quality to a new level. The update focuses on nuanced language details, including idioms, slang, and local expressions that can often lose their meaning.
According to Google, the upgrade delivers state-of-the-art translation quality across its platforms. Users can access it through Google Search and the Translate app on both iOS and Android devices. The rollout starts today in the US and India, supporting translations between English and nearly 20 languages. These include Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German.
At the same time, Google is introducing a new beta feature for real-time voice translation through headphones. The tool preserves tone, emphasis, and speaking rhythm to make conversations sound more natural. To use it, users need to open the Translate app, connect headphones, and tap Live Translate.
This beta experience is now rolling out on Android in the US, Mexico, and India. It supports more than 70 languages. Google plans to expand it to more regions and bring it to iOS in 2026.
Google is also improving its language learning tools inside Translate. Users will now receive clearer feedback based on speaking practice. In addition, a new tracking feature helps learners stay motivated by counting how many days they practice in a row.
These learning tools are expanding to nearly 20 new countries and territories. The list includes Germany, India, Sweden, and Taiwan. With these updates, Google is pushing Translate beyond basic text conversion and closer to real-world communication.
