Google is transforming the search experience yet again, this time with the wider release of an interactive “AI Mode” built right into its search results.
Unlike the “AI Overview” feature, which has been a standard component of Search since last year, “AI Mode” functions as a dynamic chatbot that users can engage with directly during their search sessions.
Previously restricted to a Google Labs experiment, the new feature is now being made available to “a small percentage of people” in the U.S. over the coming weeks. Those included in this rollout will notice an “AI Mode” tab within their search interface. By clicking it, they’ll gain access to chatbot-powered insights tailored to their queries.
“For example, if you’re looking for the best vintage shops for mid-century modern furniture, AI Mode will show local stores along with helpful insights like live busyness, and you can easily call or get directions,” Google explains.
Even if you’re not part of the current Search release, there’s good news: Google Labs users in the U.S. can now access AI Mode without joining a waitlist, as it has been opened to the public.
Designed for Exploration and Contextual Assistance
What sets “AI Mode” apart is its focus on open-ended, exploratory questions, going beyond the typical keyword-driven searches. You can ask about the “advantages of various types of fibers for jackets” or seek recommendations on “tools and equipment needed for new hobbies.”
Not only does the chatbot provide relevant information, but it also goes a step further by pointing users to stores or resources aligned with their interests.
Unlike traditional search methods, this mode supports natural, conversational interaction. And a standout feature: “AI Mode” remembers your previous questions and responses, allowing you to pick up where you left off in past sessions.
As with all AI-driven tools, accuracy remains a key concern. But Google emphasizes that “AI Mode” leverages real-time information and multiple data sources to ensure the answers it provides are timely and as accurate as possible.
